Joel Kaddy Obituary

Obituary for Joel R. Kaddy

Joel R. Kaddy passed away at the age of 69 on April 18, 2024, unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep. Born on July 20, 1954 in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Joel grew into a pillar of his community in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where he resided most of his life.

Joel graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1973 and later earned a degree in Criminal Justice from Mount Wachusett Community College. His career was as diverse as it was distinguished, beginning in his youth when he rose from dishwasher to head chef at the Old Mill Restaurant in Westminster, MA. Joel and his wife Jean were the proud co-owners of ‘Once Upon a Tile’, a local tile business, which they ran for 37 years (1985 - 2022). He also served proudly and with distinction as a police officer at the Fitchburg Police Department for 25 years (1978-2003). His dedication to public service continued as he served on the Fitchburg City Council for 15 years (2004-2019). In 2009, Joel was honored with Fitchburg’s Hometown Heroes Award in recognition of his unparalleled commitment to the community.

Joel’s hobbies and interests painted the picture of a life richly lived. He was a world traveler, a passionate gardener, and enjoyed antiquing, wood carving, ice sculpting, skiing, and cheering on the New England Patriots. His love for bicycling led him to establish “Fitchburg Rides,” a community program that provided bicycles to children in need.

Joel's community involvement was extensive, including participating in an international police officer exchange in Russia, organizing the local “Oktoburgfest” beer festival, contributing to the Forge-in Blacksmith festival, and spearheading efforts for the Fitchburg Civic Cleanup Corps. His commitment to improving local lives extended to his hands-on restoration work at the Fitchburg Senior Center.

He is survived by his loving spouse, Jean (Farrell) Kaddy; son, Jesse Kaddy; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Kaddy; grandson, Jack Kaddy; siblings, Raymond Kaddy, Sheila Kaddy, and Donald Kaddy Jr.; along with 20 nieces and nephews. Joel was predeceased by his son, Jacob Kaddy, and his parents, Donald and Shirley Kaddy.

Joel was cherished for his kindness, generosity, and humor. His legacy of love and laughter will be forever remembered by all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held at the Fitchburg Senior Center, 14 Wallace Ave, Fitchburg, MA 01420, on Saturday April 27th from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association, a cause close to Joel's heart, or donate your time to a cause that benefits the city of Fitchburg.

Joel’s life was a testament to his love for his community and the people in his life. He will be greatly missed, but his influence will remain in the hearts of those he touched. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the outpouring of support they have experienced since his passing.
