Obituary

Eunice (Debbie) Scanlon

December 27, 1927 - March 4, 2023

The youngest of 11, Eunice was nicknamed Debbie (after a famous dancer of that time) by her loving brothers and sisters. Eunice was naturally athletic and loved to dance, speed skate, and play field hockey. In her later years she took up competitive tennis and real estate as hobbies and was President of the Daughters of Isabella for many years. She was always a natural leader who led by example with humility, integrity, and character.

Eunice cherished her family and friendships, never wanting to be a burden on anyone. She figured out early in her life that the key to success was hard work. She attended Fitchburg Teachers College, as it was known at that time. While a student Eunice was Captain of the Women’s Field Hockey Team and was one of only five members of the Class of 1950 to receive the White Blazer, Letter and Key. She was also Vice President of the Philodemics, and Vice President of the Delta Phi Delta sorority. Eunice was proud of graduating with straight A’s as she worked hard to balance her life’s demands. During her time in college, she formed life long friendships; a group of 10 exceptional women who remained close friends over 70 years. They journeyed through life together, supporting each other during good and challenging times.

Teaching was our mother’s passion. She dedicated her life’s work to granting each child the gift of learning. After receiving her Masters and 60 credits beyond, she focused her career on teaching literacy and became the Reading Supervisor for middle and lower schools.

Eunice is predeceased by 10 siblings and her son, Francis. She leaves behind her loving and caring daughters Sheila and Patty, her adoring grandson, Will, and son-in-law David.

In lieu of flowers, the family is creating a scholarship in support of a female student athlete studying education who has demonstrated character on and off the field.
