Joseph Altieri III Obituary

Joseph S. Altieri, III

FITCHBURG - Joseph S. Altieri, III, 63, passed away on June 22, 2021. Joseph was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts on April 23,1958 and was the beloved son of Mary (Greco) Altieri and the late Joseph Altieri, Jr.  He is survived by and will be forever missed by his twin sister Jo-Ann Altieri, his brother David Altieri and his three children who were his “pride and joy”, Anthony Altieri, Angela Altieri and Alexandria Altieri. His niece, Gianna Altieri and his Godmother, Joanne DiPrima, as well as many cousins who were all very close.

Joe attended St. Anthony’s School and Fitchburg High School Class of 1976.  While in high school he was very active in school plays and was a member of the Jazz Band.  When Joe was 7 years old, he received a tabletop organ for Christmas and that was the start of his music career.  He could not read music notes, so he would memorize tunes and learned to play by ear.  He played in local bands such as Open Road, Adrial and the Harm’s, in which he played electric keyboards.  He and some of his friends were the first to play Folk music at the Madonna of the Holy Rosary Church in Fitchburg.  He also played in many churches and at weddings in the Fitchburg and Leominster area.  When the bands dispersed, he became a DJ/Karaoke Entertainer, and was well known as “DJ JOEY” in which he had a huge following wherever he was playing. There was not a musician in this area who did not know who Joseph Altieri was. He also enjoyed working alongside his Father, at Altieri’s Hillside Cafe when he was younger.

Joe had a very bright and social personality, a great sense of humor and he never failed to strike up a conversation that ended in laughter and smiles. He always made many friends everywhere he went.  He was an avid movie, history and sci-fi fan and was always watching the history channels. One of his favorite pastimes was watching Star Trek with his children.  His favorite motto was “MUSIC MAKES ME SMILE!” and could always be found listening to music or playing on his piano in his home.
