Obituary
Leon “Calegero” Bellio, 99 passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 2,2021 at the Highlands , with his family at his side.
Leon was born in Fitchburg, MA on May 5, 1922, the son of Dominic and Rosalia (Castranova) Bellio. He was a lifelong resident of Fitchburg before moving to Leominster several years ago. Leon attended and graduated from Fitchburg High School Class of 1941. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army in December of 1942 serving in the 605th Coast Artillary Corps during WW 2. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Leon worked at the former Simonds Saw & Steel and was the longtime owner of East Side Mobil on Lunenburg St. in Fitchburg before his retirement many years ago. He was member of St. Anthony de Padua Church, Sons of Italy Cristoforo Regina Elena Lodge, and the Italian American War Veterans.
In his younger days Leon excelled at basketball, baseball, and bowling. He loved all things horse racing. He along with his two sons owned “Three B Stables” and had many wonderful and fond memories of their jaunts to Suffolk Downes and trips to the finish line. Leon also enjoyed going dancing with his wife, Rose to whom he was married for 74 years. He really cherished his visits with his growing family in person and through his “Portal” video messages.
Leon is survived by his wife Rose (Zarbo) Bellio, his daughter Sandra Peterson of Portsmouth, RI:; a son Leon A. “Chip” Bellio and wife Kim of Fitchburg, their children Marissa Lane and husband Brian, and Michael; a son Gary Bellio, and his wife Gisele of Inman, South Carolina and their children, Justin and wife Melissa, Andrea, Marc-Anthony, and Vincent. He also leaves 3 great granddaughters, Gemma-Sophia, Madison, and Avery.
He was predeceased by his son-in-law Walther Peterson, his brother Aurelio Bellio and his three sisters, Concetta Hildreth, Rose Cormier, and Carmella Cochran.
At Leon’s request funeral services and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers donation may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000 DEPT 142, Memphis , TN , 38101-9908
