With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Leon “Tom” Thomas Forgues. Tom passed peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and children in his home on September 11, 2023. Born on March 25, 1941, in Fitchburg, MA, he continued to live in Fitchburg for the rest of his 82 years of life.
Tom attended Fitchburg schools but left before graduating to help his family by working. He worked at Fitchburg Paper for many years before working for the Fitchburg Public School System where he retired as the Director of Building Maintenance, where he took great pride in his work.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter, including the achievement of shooting a moose in Maine with his son Mike and nephew Greg. He spent many mornings exploring the waters of the Quabbin Reservoir searching for the best salmon and lake trout. Tom was a member of the Fitchburg Sportsman’s Club where he was awarded Sportsman of the Year in 2019. He could often be found in his gardens or working in his yard. His love for the outdoors was only outdone by his love for his family.
Tom loved to spend his summers on the Cape camping with family. Camping with his wife and kids, then grandchildren, were some of the best times of his life. Tom and his wife Donna also enjoyed traveling in their later years to enjoy the beautiful beaches of Florida, St. John and the wondrous mountains and valleys of the western state’s national parks. Fishing in Alaska and taking in the sweeping beauty of the Grand Canyon were some of his fondest memories.
Tom is survived by his wife of 64 years, Donna (Daigle) Forgues, son, Mike Forgues, and his wife Linda, of Boothbay, ME; daughter, Pam Bylund, and her husband Ken of Fitchburg; David Forgues and Teresa Nagle, of Ashby, and Jeff Forgues of Gardner; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren with one on the way; brother Larry Forgues, and his significant other Carolyn, sister Donna Auger and her husband Richard; sister-in-law Jean Gastonguay and her husband Ed; several nieces and nephews and their families.
Tom is predeceased by his parents, Leon and Marion Forgues, his brother Allen Forgues in 2015, and his sister Marcia Forgues in 1944.
As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate a life well-lived, filled with joy, compassion, and unwavering commitment to family and friends. Tom will be profoundly missed but his love and memory will live on.
A private celebration of life will be held by family.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the nurses at Beacon Hospice for their compassion and thoughtful care.
