Obituary
Ashby : Maryann J. Tardy (Cioffi) 84 of Ashby, MA passed away peacefully on Thursday ,February 3,2022 in Health Alliance Leominster Hospital with her family at her side.
Born in Fitchburg, MA January 19,1938 to parents Mary (Capone) and Antonio Cioffi in the predominately Italian neighborhood called “The Patch”, “Mary” as she wished to known as, attended and graduated from St. Bernard’s Central Catholic High School. After her graduation, she went to work at a small shoe store on Main St. in Fitchburg where she met Garfield Tardy aka ‘Butch’ to everyone else who knows him, and were married in October of 1959.
They lived in Townsend for a number of years while she worked at General Electric in the business office, leaving once she had her children Janet and Jerry.
Mary enjoyed bowling .She was in many leagues over the years and even won the local Fitchburg Sentinel Tournament at Putnam Lanes and was also on the TV show Candlepin Bowling Stars, where she won a cruise and numerous prizes. She was also a bowling instructor to children at Mason Bowling Alley in Leominster and The Hub in Lunenburg for many years.
After moving to Belchertown due to Butch’s job at Westover Air Force Base, she enjoyed raising her children and going to bingo. She and her family stayed in Belchertown until Butch’s job moved them back to the area where they found a home in Ashby. Mary continued going to Bingos and eventually volunteered and became a popular caller an Bingos throughout the area and made many many friends over the years.
She was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. Mary also loved the ocean and would frequently travel to Maine with Butch to enjoy the view and fabulous seafood. She was a beautiful wife, mother, and friend with a zest for life and was definitely “One of a Kind”.
She is survived by her husband Garfield N. Tardy of Ashby, her son Jerry of Ashby and daughter Janet and her husband John of Rindge, NH, as well as numerous cousins, and friends who loved her dearly.
She was Interred in Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery, Winchendon after a private family ceremony. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
