The family of Matthew George L’Ecuyer is heartbroken to announce his passing on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the age of forty-nine.
He is survived by his father and best friend, George L’Ecuyer, his lifelong partner in crime, his sister Nicole Mahoney, her fiancé and his brother-in-heart Arthur Graustein, the lights of his life his nieces, Mary Mahoney and Elizabeth Mahoney, and his birthday buddy, his cousin Anne Tucker, all of Fitchburg. He is predeceased by his mother Elizabeth L’Ecuyer and his brother-in-law Philip Mahoney.
Matthew was born on March 25, 1976. He attended St. Bernard’s Elementary School, then graduated from Saint Bernard’s Central Catholic High School in 1994. Matthew later graduated from Fitchburg State College with a degree in business. Throughout college and into his adult years Matt was a central figure behind the bar at The Rendezvous and Bootlegger Restaurants. He made many friends in his loyal customers. He never failed to brighten someone’s day by remembering their favorite meal or drink or simply offering a listening ear. Matt spent his entire professional career working in various positions in the Human Resources Department of Fresenius Medical Care, in which he took great pride. Matt’s cubicle at work was well known for having that special flair with its mood lighting, dozens of plants, and famous oriental carpet mouse pads. Matt’s home and home office were nothing less than a spectacular Zen Den, and he enjoyed every minute of his life there in his work from home years.
Matt had an eye and ear for the ornate and never missed a detail, but he found his greatest joys in life’s simple pleasures. Matt had opportunities to travel throughout his life and enjoyed making new memories throughout these travels. He took special trips with his family and former partner Anthony. However, his most cherished times away were in his yearly October weekends with his best friends Kristen, Jess, and Lori.
While most young children would get up to watch cartoons on Saturday mornings, Matt could be found watching Julia Child or Bob Vila’s This Old House on PBS. It was these early years that inspired a lifelong love of creating things with fine details and mastering the art of cooking. Matt was well known for his gorgeous food creations and meticulous baking. He found true joy sharing his passion for cooking by sharing meals with family, neighbors, and friends. His memorable social media food posts left his viewers hungry for his delicious food.
Over the last few years Matt developed and cultivated a love of painting. He began finding rocks that he painted into hearts, fruits, or animals. This hobby grew into a passion for working with acrylic paints on canvas. He would spend weeks perfecting a seasonal scene, capturing nature, recreating a favorite portrait, or simply painting something silly that would make someone smile.
Matt was a lover of nature, candles, the stars, the moon, crystals, sage, and rain. He found great satisfaction in finding treasures at yard sales, thrift shops, and side of the road lucky finds. He turned each of his hauls into works of art to be admired by his guests. Matt loved and respected animals of all kinds. He fed the birds, took delight in dragon flies, and above all adored cats. Since early childhood, Matt was not without a cat by his side. He leaves behind his most precious companion Fig for his family to love.
Matt was quirky and could crack people up without saying a word. His giggle was genuine and infectious. He was a master of impressions, funny one-word responses, perfectly timed movie quoting, and giver of knowing glances. Whatever the relationship, he had a unique way of making people feel like they were the most important person in the world in that instant. Matt had countless moments that he shared with family or friends that belonged quietly between them. He never forgot those moments and he held them close to his heart.
Matt loved music of all kinds and all eras. He loved dancing in his kitchen and on his porch in the rain. Think of Matt the next time you hear Lady Gaga, Madonna, Phish, Howie Day, Mamas and the Papas, Pink, Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, or Alanis Morisette, to name just a few. When you hear music that reminds you of Matt, hold your own dance party for one and think of a special memory of Matt.
Matt loved a good adventure and spending time with friends and family. However, he was more than content to spend a weekend night in his big brown recliner with his feet up laughing and feeling nostalgic watching I Love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, Bob Barker era The Price is Right, Brady Bunch, Cosby Show, and Golden Girls.
Matt was a treasure to all who knew him. The world was a kinder and more thoughtful place with him in it, and he will be sorely missed. Until we all meet again, dear Matthew, Thank You For Being a Friend.
