Miriam (Casassa) DePietro, 97, passed peacefully into eternal rest on November 16, 2016 in the Highlands
A native of Fitchburg, MA, and the daughter of Mary (Duffey) and Charles Casassa, she studied opera at the New England Conservatory and with Enrico Rosati. She spent many years performing in operas in New York and Philadelphia before returning back to the Fitchburg area, where she taught voice well into her 80s. She was both proud of and dedicated to her Bel Canto singers and, despite her advancing years, always found the will and the energy to coach, teach, and organize concerts.
She is survived by her daughters Donna and son-in-law Tim Kohl; Judy and her son-in-law Peter Mercier; grandsons, Dr. Colin Beier (and wife, April) and Peter J Mercier IV (and wife, Valena); two great-granddaughters; Norah and Hannah, her brother William (and wife Maggie); and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and former voice students.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Susan and John Pierce, Fallon Healthcare in Leominster, and the Highlands Nursing Home in Fitchburg. A memorial service is planned for spring 2017. There are no calling hours.
The family asks that expressions of condolence be made to St Jude Children’s’ Hospital or Covenant House.
The Lavery Chartrand Alario Funeral Home 99 Summer St. Fitchburg, MA. is directing arrangements.
