Theresa “Lilly” Spagnuola, affectionately known to many as Aunt Lil, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 30th, 2025, at 11:00 AM at UMass Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness. She was 88 years old.
Born on September 1st, 1936, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Lilly brought warmth, kindness, and a quiet strength to everyone who had the joy of knowing her. She was a loving daughter who cared for her parents before their deaths, a beloved sister, aunt, and friend whose gentle spirit and generous heart left a lasting impression on all who crossed her path.
This past year, Lilly made her home at The Bolton Country Manor in Bolton, MA, where she was cherished by both the council on aging staff and fellow residents for her sweet nature and ever-present smile.
Though she may no longer be with us in person, Aunt Lil’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her—through the stories she shared, the laughter she inspired, and the love she gave so freely.
Lilly was the cherished youngest daughter of Antonio and Josephine Spagnuolo. She was preceded in death by her beloved siblings—three devoted brothers, Dino, Joe, and Tony, and two loving sisters, Mary Cormier and Jenny Atkinson—each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Lilly was deeply loved by her extended family, including ten adoring nephews and two devoted nieces who treasured her presence in their lives. She was a proud and playful great-aunt to seven grandnephews and one grandniece, and a joyful great-great-aunt to eight grandnephews and five grandnieces. Her love for family knew no bounds, and she embraced each new generation with open arms and a warm heart.
In addition to her biological family, Lilly was lovingly embraced as an honorary member of the Caruso family. She shared many joyful years living with Mary and Irene Caruso in Leominster, MA, where she found a second home filled with laughter, companionship, and love.
Aunt Lil had a deep passion for the arts—especially opera, which stirred her soul—and she was an avid reader who found joy in the written word. Her love for Italian cooking was legendary, and her homemade sauce, rich with tradition and flavor, became a treasured staple at countless family gatherings. It was more than a recipe—it was a symbol of her love and heritage, savored by all who were lucky enough to taste it.
Lilly’s zest for life was infectious. She loved to dance, had a sharp wit, and was a masterful storyteller with a delightful sense of humor. Her magnetic, youthful spirit made her a joy to be around—she lit up every room she entered and left behind a trail of laughter and love.
Those of us who were blessed to know and love her will forever hold our memories of Aunt Lil close to our hearts. Her presence was a gift, her love a blessing, and her legacy will live on in the stories we share and the traditions we carry forward.
Lilly was a devoted member of Saint Anthony’s Church in Fitchburg, where her faith was deeply rooted. Over the years, she also found spiritual nourishment attending Mass regularly at Saint Francis and Saint Camillus churches. Her unwavering devotion to her Catholic faith was a guiding light in her life. She was known for her daily prayers, often lifting up the names of family, friends, and even strangers in need. Her quiet, steadfast spirituality was a source of comfort and strength to those around her, and her compassionate heart reflected the very essence of her beliefs.
